Product Review: L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Waterproof Mascara

The L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara has probably been one of the most talked about drugstore mascaras of this year, but does it live up to the hype?

0.pngThe L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara, which retails for $9.99, has probably been one of the most talked about drugstore mascaras of this year.  Lauded for its long-wearing abilities, lengthening and voluminous benefits, and ability to keep lashes curled, it currently boasts 4.3 stars from 507 reviews on ULTA.com.

Many people have commented on how it looks eerily similar to Too Faced’s Better Than Sex Mascara ($23.00) with the “millenial pink” packaging and even similarities with the wand, although from the pictures on their respective websites, BTS seems to have a thicker, more hourglass-shaped wand than LP.

A quick YouTube search of “l’oreal lash paradise too faced dupe” will yield about 8,640 results, so the YouTube community is clearly on board with the fact that these two look similar.  In the past, I’ve tried both the washable and waterproof versions of BTS, and while the waterproof version made me happy enough, I found myself not really like the washable version.  For those of you who are new here, this was no surprise as I generally dislike washable mascaras – I mainly look for mascaras that keep my eyelashes curled because mine are sad and straight, as well as mascaras that don’t flake because I wear contacts, and waterproof mascaras are usually the only kind up to that task.

For this reason, when I heard L’Oreal had a waterproof version of Lash Paradise, I immediately hopped on board.  I actually couldn’t find it anywhere in store, so I ended up getting mine from Amazon for $8.97.

I think the packaging is cute and sleek.  It’s simple, but looks surprisingly expensive for a drugstore mascara.

The wand itself has actual brush-like bristles rather than rubber bristles, and I tend to go back and forth in preference between the two.  Again, my main concerns with my mascara are its ability to hold a curl and its anti-flakiness, with the former usually being a function of wand shape.

I tend to like wands with a “c-shape,” such as Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara ($8.99) or Maybelline Volum’ Express The Colossal Cat Eyes Mascara ($6.99).  In general, I really like Maybelline mascaras – I don’t really believe in buying high end mascara because drugstore mascaras perform just as well for me, and I’m not looking to spend over $20 on something that I’m going to have to replace every 2-3 months anyway.

Now that I went off on my obligatory tangent, according to ULTA, you get the following benefits from the Lash Paradise mascara:

Typically, I like to review products based on the claims made on the packaging, as well as other general things I look for in the type of product – the benefits “called out” above seem to be “full fringe effect,” “feathery soft lashes,” “length,” and “volume,” but I’ll be throwing in what I additionally look for in a mascara as well:

1.) Full Fringe Effect | Rating: A

Tbh I’m not sure what a “fringe effect” is exactly (unless they’re somehow referring to capacitance here), but I will say that my lashes do look more fanned out, which is what I think they were going for, so I’m gonna give this an ‘A’!

2.) Feathery Soft Lashes | Rating: A

One of the things I like about this mascara is that it doesn’t make my lashes feel stiff at all – some mascaras tend to make my lashes feel really “brittle,” as if they’d just snap off if I tried to bend them.  This category definitely gets an ‘A’ in my books!

3.) Length | Rating: C

I see a slight lengthening effect, but nothing too major.  I think this is probably because this mascara doesn’t claim to have any fibers or the like in it – I’m never exactly sure how a mascara in general can lengthen without these fibers, but every mascara seems to claim this! I’m just gonna drop this ‘C’ right here – tbh, I don’t really look for lengthening properties in my mascara, so this isn’t really that big of a deal to me.

4.) Volume | Rating: B

This is the first thing that really matters to me when it comes to a good mascara – I take a lot of care in curling my lashes, so I want a mascara that will actually hold the curl.  Even though this wand isn’t curved like my usual preference, the formula itself does a nice job of holding a curl.  What I really like about this mascara is that my lashes look the same at the end of a 12-hour day as they did right when I put this mascara on! Definite ‘A’ rating here.

6.) Flaking | Rating: A

This mascara really stays put – no flaking at all! If you’re a contact-wearer like me, you’ll know this is key to any non-irritating eye makeup.  I’ve had waterproof mascaras flake on me and get caught under my contacts, which is a real b-word because it hurts like another b-word, so I’m very happy that this mascara doesn’t do that at all.  Another ‘A’ from me!

My preferred method of removal for any mascara is to put on some Pond’s Cold Cream, gently rub it in to break up the product, and then remove the residue with a makeup wipe before proceeding to wash my face like usual, which tends to remove most, if not all of this mascara.  If I’m being lazy, I might notice a little residue left under my eyes in the morning, but it’s nowhere near full-on raccoon mode.

While I know that when it comes to removal, waterproof mascaras are harder to remove due to the nature of the beast, some mascaras are just ridiculously hard to remove and stick to my lashes like tar.  These mascaras are what I tend to stay away from because I have sparse, delicate lashes in general and don’t want to risk pulling any out in any aggressive tugging it may take to remove the mascara in the first place.  This mascara somehow lies in the “sweet spot” of mascaras that stay put all day, yet aren’t completely difficult to remove, which garners it another ‘A.’

OVERALL RATING: A-
While not my favorite mascara ever due to my preference with more curved wands, this is still a great mascara.  For those of you looking for length, I would stick towards mascaras that have fibers in them, as most mascaras like this just wouldn’t be able to lengthen your lashes anyway.  If you’re looking for volume, this may not completely satisfy you, but I was content with how volumized it made my lashes and did like the nice fanned-out effect I got from this mascara.

The fact that this mascara kept my lashes curled, didn’t flake after the end of a long day, and wasn’t impossible to get off is really what made this mascara for me – again, everybody has different preferences, so make sure you do your research before purchasing products!
