I own over 80 lipsticks, but surprisingly, I don’t actually own a black lipstick. Deciding that’s not how I want to live my life, I decided to rectify the situation and get a lipstick that’s as bleak and dark as my sense of humor – here are my first impressions on Colourpop’s Ultra Matte Lip in “Friday!”
So… I have over 80 lipsticks – 82 with this latest addition, to be exact. Colourpop lip products make up about 44% of my entire collection as I have 36 of them. If you’re wondering how I know all this, it’s because I have a Lipstick Archive I like to keep in Excel. Is this excessive? Probably, but we all know how extra I am.

As mentioned, this Colourpop Ultra Matte lipstick in Friday is my 82nd lipstick overall, my 36th Colourpop lipstick, and my 1st black lipstick! While I’m not really shy when it comes to wearing crazy lipstick shades, I’m not quite sure how adventurous I’ll be to wearing this black lipstick. Spoiler: due to the nature of this lipstick, this post may contain references to the “ABC Café/Red and Black” song from Les Mis.
Friday was originally part of Colourpop’s Moment of Weekness bundle ($36), which is now currently sold out. It’s also sold individually on the website for $6, the same price as every other Colourpop lipstick that comes in liquid form. On the Moment of Weekness page, Friday is described as being a “matte true black,” whereas on the individual product page, the description is: “True black…Bye Felicia!” This is a lot more fun, IMO.
I’m a big fan of the box for Friday because I think the all-black looks really sleek. Of course, this has nothing to do with the product performance itself, but I figured I’d just throw that out there. In terms of the actual tube itself, it’s the same as their usual liquid lipsticks. Even though Friday is an Ultra Matte, the actual applicator resembles their Ultra Satins because it’s “fuzzy” instead of being smooth.

It’s also a little bit on the smaller side, similar to Point Zero, one of the Ultra Satins from the KathleenLights collab. If you have no idea what I’m talking about here, I cover this in my First Impression: KathleenLights x Colourpop Collab | Point Zero Ultra Satin Lip & Mr. Bing Liner post, but I’ve inserted one of the pictures from that post above as well so you can see what I mean.
Swatch-wise, Friday definitely doesn’t disappoint. I was pleasantly surprised by how pigmented this is on the first swipe – again, this is my first black lipstick so I don’t have anything to compare it to, but I definitely wasn’t expecting complete opacity with only one go. As you can see from the swatches above, there’s no color change based on flash, showing how black this shade truly is. I am agog! I am aghast!

From some of the darker lipsticks I own, I know that sometimes dark shades can be a little bit finicky and streaky at first and it takes a little bit of finagling to get to the true color, but there was none of that with this one. The formula itself seems to be a little more on the creamy side vs. the liquidy side, which is how most of the Ultra Mattes I’ve encountered are.
Even though I knew this was pigmented from an arm swatch, I was still a little nervous about the lip swatch, but this shade is super easy to apply. Even though my lip swatches above are kinda messy because I’m trash and was in a rush, the smaller applicator makes it really easy to get a precise line, and again, since it’s so pigmented, you don’t have to mess around with it too much. The creamy formula also aids in the whole application because the product doesn’t just slip around and actually stays where you put it. It’s better than an opera.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that this shade isn’t drying at all, which is the risk you run with a lot of Colourpop’s other Ultra Mattes (anybody else feel the drying factor is kind of a hit-and-miss with them?). I will say that it does take a little bit longer to dry than most of their other Ultra Mattes, but that’s probably due to the thicker texture of the lipstick itself (you can kind of see this in the obvious wet patch near the inner part of my lips in the swatch above).
My lips were pretty dry when I watched this (it was my last swatch in a line of 6 other lipsticks so my lips were basically on FIRE at this point), and although it doesn’t cling to dry patches, I feel as though it emphasizes the lines in my lips a little bit. This would probably be fixed pretty easily if my lips weren’t raw from swatching, but this honestly doesn’t really bother me either.
OVERALL FIRST IMPRESSION: Although Friday is an Ultra Matte, it actually reminds me a lot of their Ultra Satin formula due to the thickness and the drying time. It DOES dry completely matte, but it isn’t 100% transfer-proof, as you can see from the “kiss test” done below.
Honestly, all things considered, this isn’t a horrible transfer as the lipstick itself is just so damn pigmented and dark it’s truly as black as the dark of ages past. I’m excited to see how long this actually wears, although I have no idea how to wear black lipstick or what kind of makeup to pair it with without making me look like some kind of ultra-goth. I personally never went through the whole 6th grade emo phase and am not planning on trying it out now.

[…] I stopped my mixer every so often, making sure to scrape the sides of my bowl with the aforementioned Disney spatula, and soon, the mixture was combined, looking as red as a world about to dawn (sorry, I guess I’m not over the Les Mis referencing thing that I started in my last post). […]

This was really helpful in helping me decide to get this product. I went through an emo phase in high school and I’d love to revive that now, lol!
